Who we are

Penn Valley Pack 247 is a Family Unit and part of Scouting America. We are a self-chartered scouting unit so the parents are the Chartering organization and make the decisions for the unit. The Cub Scout program is for kids grades K-5th Grades accepting boys and girls from K to 5th grade.

Do you like to learn by doing? This is just the place. You can learn to tie knots, set up a tent, shoot a bow and arrow (archery). Have you ever cooked a meal on a campfire? Sent a secret code to a buddy? Built a birdhouse? Hiked? Family camping and outdoors activities; ecology, local history and sports are the focuses of many of our Pack activities.

The pack is divided into smaller groups called dens. Each den has about six to eight scouts. All of the Cub Scouts in your den are in the same grade and may even go to the same school. Developing the Child: Buiding life skills and self confidence is the core of our program. To do all this the young children have to have fun.

Uniforms

Scout Uniform

Uniforms are a key part of the methods of Scouting. To find out what uniform your child needs, check out the uniform builder. The uniform consists of a shirt, belt, cap, and neckerchief with slide, pants / shorts/ skorts.

The patches indicate the Pack (Pack247), the Council (Cradle of Liberty Council), The Den achievements and belt loops are worn as well as optional patches that can hang from the pocket.

To buy your uniform and get assistance, check out the Valley Forge Scout Shop. Check with your Den Leader first because they may have gentley used uniforms to pass down (a Scout is Thrifty!)

What is a Family Pack?

In Scouting America Cub Scouts, "family unit" refers to the involvement of the Cub Scout's family, including parents and other adult family members, in the program. This means that families are not just participants but also actively contribute to the program, providing support, leadership, and encouragement to the Cub Scout. Parents or guardians must attend and participate with the scouts. In essence, family involvement in Cub Scouting means that the family is not just supporting the Cub Scout's journey but also actively participating in it, making it a shared and enriching experience for everyone involved

What are the Dues?

When compared to the cost of sports and many other activities, there is no doubt that Scouting delivers great value to its members! There are National, Council and Pack level dues.

Scouting America: annual fee is $85.

Scout Life magazine: $15*

Cradle of Liberty Council: $25* (Donor Supported)

Pack Dues: $110 (estimated 2025-2026)

Total: $235

*Optional

Are their additional costs?

Scouts will need a uniform, some personal gear for hiking and camping.

Most activities are free, some have a nominal fee such as camping which covers food and permits and some like Phillies Scout night are an additional cost depending on the ticket price.

What is a Den and a Pack?

Cub Scouts are part of dens. These are small groups of Scouts who are in the same grade or are the same age. This is the group in Cub Scouts that meets most frequently.

There are several dens in a “pack.” As packs meet, kids of a wider range of ages showcase what they’re learning in their den. That means outdoor fun, skits, games, songs, and award ceremonies happen with a wide variety of Cub Scouts and their families.

What to bring Camping?

If you have never been camping or are inexperienced, your Den Leaders and other parents in the Pack are here as a resource for you! There is typically a Fall, Spring and a Summer Campout organized by the Pack. This is a great time to spend some time with your cub or bring the whole family for the fun.

Here's a traditional camping pack list Overnight Campout Packing List.

Remember that there’s no bad weather, just bad gear and when camping outdoors it’s very important to have a sleeping system rated for the temperature (Check the “comfort rating” not the “lower limit” or “survival rating”) REI’s article Understanding Sleeping Bag Temperature Ratings. It’s also very important to have a mattress with thermal protection in addition to being comfortable.

Getting started camping can be an investment. But if you don’t have these things, don’t let that stop you. A Scout is Thrifty, so ask around and see what can be borrowed!
