Activities - Pack 247 loves to hike, camp, play games and participate in adventures

  • Four Cub Scouts, one from each Den, walking in a forest, balancing on a fallen log.

    Hiking

Pack 247 loves to get outside and hike! Getting out in nature, learning about trees and wildlife, the Leave No Trace Principles and the Outdoor Code are fundamental principles of scouting. Scouts have fun, burn off energy, climb on fallen trees, skip stones in creeks but also learn about the the six essential items to bring while in the outdoors (first aid kit, sun protections, trail mix, water, flashlight and a whistle).

  • Two Scouts setting up a camping tent in a forested area on a sunny day.

    Camping

Camping is a big part of scouting. Pack 247 plans at least three outdoor camping trips per year (Fall, Spring and Summer). In the Winter there is a ‘camp-in’. Scouts participate in age appropriate activities starting with planning and packing, then setting up camp (tent, sleeping systems etc), starting a campfire, whittling and cooking. There is a campfire program with skits, songs, advancement ceremonies and of course S’mores!

  • Scouts participating in a Pinewood Derby, with a race track set up outdoors and checkered flags decorating the scene.

    Pinewood Derby

The Pinewood Derby was started in 1953 by Cub Scout parent Don Murphy. It’s a racing event in the Cub Scout program of Scouting America. Parents work with their Cub Scouts to build miniature, unpowered, wooden cars from kits, then race them down a sloped track using only gravity. The Pinewood Derby is a fun Cub Scout racing event that promotes sportsmanship and creativity with the top racers and best design advancing to the District competition.

  • A group of Scouts and their families at a Phillies stadium with the city skyline in the background. They are wearing Phillies gear and holding snacks, smiling at the camera.

    Phillies Scout Night

Pack 247 attends the Philadelphia Phillies “Scout Night” as a group. There’s a special patch and discounted group rates for tickets. We will typically attend a Scout night for the Flyers or 76ers also!

  • An adult hands a can of food to a child in a Cub Scout uniform, as part of a food donation with Scouting for Food.

    Scouting for Food

Scouting for Food is one of nation’s largest food drives that Cub Scouts participate in to support their local food pantries and hunger-relief agencies. The Scouts of the Cradle of Liberty Council have continuously exceeded expectations and helped fulfill the need. Donations are given to a local food pantries.

  • A group of Scouts wearing yellow Class-B uniforms shirts riding bicycles attend a safety event, supervised by adults and police officers, on a sunny day with trees and a blue sky.

    Bike Rodeo

The bike rodeo is a fun event in the Fall that’s also a “Bring a Friend” event where Scouts are invited to invite a friend to join in the fun. Scouts participate in skill stations and fun activities like ramps, obstacle course, “bike wash” and free ride area. LMPD Bike Patrol is there to teach the kids about bike safety.
